Editorial Work

(Otherwise known as, Keeping the Lights On)

GQ Al Parker Clip.jpg

A fiction writer moonlighting as a journalist means narrative-driven pieces with interesting entry points. I dig “why should someone care about this?” hooks and original reporting that doesn’t just rehash what’s already on Google.

From getting butts into seats at Black-, women-, and queer-owned restaurants to highlighting BIPOC and queer folks in the arts, my editorial work the past few years has focused on boosting, celebrating, and showcasing historically excluded and diverse voices.

Lately: Esquire, GQ, Conde Nast Traveler, Travel + Leisure, WBUR, Boston Magazine, Eater Boston, and elsewhere. Formerly: Assistant editor, The Improper Bostonian magazine, until its closure in April 2019.

Highlights

Travel

Narrative-driven destination, travel, and hotel opening stories.

Food & Drink

Reported restaurant opening features. Reviews. Roundups with fun and flair (whatever you think of ‘em, they’re the bread and butter [food pun!] of dining coverage at most publications).

I work closely with Eater Boston and serve as guest editor—running the day-to-day operations of the site including writing and editing, social posts, and newsletters—while the permanent editor takes vacation.

Arts & Entertainment

Literature coverage based on interviews with authors (after actually reading the books!). Culture essays and think-pieces. Film reviews.

Other

One of my most challenging gigs was serving as the temporary real estate editor for Boston magazine. How do you make four stories a week about local homes for sale interesting? Treat it like a creative writing prompt and come up with a story about each listing.
